Challenge Coins
The Galveston Police Department began issuing challenge coins in 2009. They are meant to serve as an award for both civil service and non-sworn employees of the Galveston Police Department.
In the wake of hurricane Ike, numerous employees recieved the award for thier contributions to the recovery effort.
The design of the coin itself changes from year to year. Typically the design will honor a particular officer, usually the most tenured officer, or one whom has displayed an act of valor or coummunity service.
