(Galveston, TX) September 12, 2012 – The Galveston Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors of the city ordinances associated with dove hunting. The City of Galveston Municipal Code states:
Sec. 24-15 – Firearms; discharging prohibited; exceptions
(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to fire off or discharge any gun, pistol, shotgun, rifle or other firearm of any description within the city easterly of 99th Street and south of the dunes west of 99th Street.
(b) It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge any gun, pistol, rifle or other firearm of any description within the city west of 99th Street. The discharge of shotguns shall be permitted when said discharge is in excess of five hundred (500) feet from a residence or a commercial structure provided that only birdshot ammunition is used. The firing of buckshot or slug ammunition from a shotgun shall be prohibited.
(c) It shall be an affirmative defense to subsection (b) that the person discharging the shotgun within five hundred (500) feet of a residential or commercial structure is either the property owner or has in the person’s possession the property owner’s written permission to discharge the shotgun, and there is no other residential or commercial structure within five hundred (500) feet.
The dove season for Galveston opens on September 21st and ends October 28, 2012. It resumes December 22nd and ends January 22, 2013.
