Kroger Managers Assist in Capture of Felony Suspect
(Galveston, TX) January 8, 2012 – Yesterday a Galveston Police Officer, H. Dominguez, was working a security job at the Kroger Supermarket, 5701 Seawall Blvd. At approximately 3:56pm a man, Sherman Johnson, was observed by employees shoplifting items from the store. Officer Dominguez and store management escorted Johnson upstairs to the business offices. Johnson was initially cooperative and answering questions, but he suddenly stood up and shoved Officer Dominguez into a wall. Johnson tried to run by Officer Dominguez, but was grabbed. Johnson then pushed Officer Dominguez down a flight of stairs in front of him. Johnson ran past our injured officer and fled the store.
Kroger Managers Tom Herring and Darrell Argo chased Johnson after grabbing a pair of Officer Dominguez’s handcuffs. Johnson ran to the Best Western motel next door where Herring and Argo caught up to him on a second floor breezeway. Johnson continued to struggle and attempt to escape as they tried to handcuff him, biting each of them before he could be subdued.
Patrol officers arrived to take custody of Johnson who was finally detained by Herring and Argo. The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office supported two counts of Robbery and one count of Assault on a Public Servant and recommended a total bond $105,000 for Johnson.
Officer Dominguez was transported by Galveston EMS to UTMB for an injury to his leg. The severity of the injury and his return to work are unknown at this time. Kroger Managers Herring and Argo were treated by EMS at the scene. The Galveston Police Department would like to thank Tom Herring and Darrell Argo for their assistance in capturing this violent individual.
