What to Expect After the Complaint is Filed
Most complaints are investigated and resolved within fourteen calendar days. Extensions for extenuating circumstances may be granted at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
Complaints are classified in two ways:
Service Complaints: These are complaints about any service, or lack of service, performed by the Galveston Police Department. They are not generally directed toward a specific employee.
Personnel Complaints: These are complaints about the performance, actions, or behavior of specific Department personnel. Once received, these complaints are classified by the Office of Professional Standards as either minor or major.
Minor and Major Complaints
Minor complaints are normally investigated by the employee’s immediate supervisor.
Major complaints are investigated by the Office of Professional Standards with assistance from the Criminal Investigation Division if the complaint is criminal in nature.
After the Investigation
After investigation, the case is given an investigative disposition. You will be notified of the disposition of the complaint via letter.
Action against an employee for a sustained misconduct may range from counseling or retraining the employee to suspension or termination. Consideration is given to the seriousness of the misconduct and the employee’s historical performance within the Department.
